The system will consist of three main workpackages:

  • W1. Acquisition and modelling. The person to be inserted in the virtual environment is filmed by several cameras. In order to produce graphical renderings of the person in the environment, models must be established for:
    • Lighting present in the filmed scene, but also in the virtual environment (position and characteristics of light sources)
    • Photometric properties of the filmed and virtual scenes (so that interactions with light - «color», reflections, refractions etc. - can be simulated)
    • Geometric models of the person and possibly other components of a scene. These are necessary for computing shadows and interactions of surfaces with light, and because the visualization will be possible from viewpoints that are arbitrarily chosen by a spectator.
  • W2. Rendering and interaction with augmented scene. The above models will be used to render the augmented scene (person + virtual environment). This requires computing interactions of light with the objects present in the scene. To be able to visualize the scene from any viewpoint, models of different parts (e.g. photometric models obtained from different cameras) must be combined.
  • W3. Data management and distributed/parallel computing. Most of the above actions handle large amounts of data and have to run in real-time, e.g. a set of 4 cameras will output about 1GB per second. Also, many of the computations required for modelling and rendering are rather complex. It is thus mandatory to distribute data acquisition/management and computations.
